Okabe, Saito, Harada and Funaki all made memorablejumps. Funaki especially played an active part in the normal- and thelarge-hill ski jump. He took the silver medal in the normal hill andthe gold in the large hill. These Olympics had many differentpersonal stories, but there was also one story which was not shown onTV.

Ryuji Takahashi, deaf since birth, overcame his disadvantage andwas chosen as a test-jumper for the Olympics. Twenty-three years oldand working for the Mito Dental Clinic in Chuo ward in Sapporo, hebegan ski jumping when he was in the 2nd year of primary school. Hisparents let him join a ski-jumping team hoping to enjoy good timeswith him. His balance in the air was bad because of his disability, but he has conquered his handicap by practicing in the summer usingin-line skis. When he was in junior and senior high school, he tookpart in national competitions, and after he graduated from the schoolfor the deaf in Otaru, he studied dentistry in the 3-yearpostgraduate course at the same school. After he completed hisstudies, he succeed in passing the national examination. After hebegan working, he continued ski jumping with his father, but theresults have not improved since he started working full time, so hewas worried that he would have to quit jumping. Then his father toldhim that since he has been ski jumping this long, he should stick itout a little more.

He was showered with attention when he won the victory at the STVCup international ski jumping meet beating Takanobu Okabe, a formerworld champion already named to the Olympic squad. He leaped 118.5meters to take the lead before nailing the day's longest jump of 130meters in the second round for a winning total of 244.3 points. Thisresult was highly rated and he was chosen as a test jumper for theNagano Olympics. His dream was to join the Olympics as a jumper. Hisdream did not come true this time, but he was be able to participatein the Olympics as a test-jumper. He said, "People don't have muchchance to watch my jumps, but I want to jump well every time." Hisfather was also glad about that, saying "I have never ever thoughtthat ski jumping is boring. He seems to love ski jumping very muchand I do too."

He does not have as much time to practice as other players, andmoreover, he does not have any colleagues to practice with, but hehas continued ski jumping. After his victory in the STV Cup meet, aninterviewer asked him about how he won the competition. He answeredwith humor, "I didn't know the other jumpers results because I can'thear the announcements. Therefore, I didn't feel any pressure."

It is a very difficult thing to keep on making an effort toachieve your dream when you have a handicap like Mr. Takahashi. Manyhandicapped people in the world were impressed with his strong willand excellent physical ability, and were greatly heartened watchingor hearing about his efforts. By overcoming his handicap heencourages not only the handicapped but also all of us to be acceptedfor what we are in our life. He is a fine example for us to follow.

I hope he succeeds in becoming an Olympic team member in Salt LakeCity.
