Do you know about the CASEC (Computerized Assessment System of English Communication)　test of English ability? This next-generation test using computers was introduced at Sapporo University on a trial basis from this year.

CASEC consists of four sections. Each section is worth 250 points for a total score of 1000. By this score you can find your rough equivalent scores of the English Language Proficiency Test (EIKEN), TOEIC and TOEFL.

Section 1 and 2 consist of questions with four alternative answers about vocabulary and expressions, and only one answer must be selected by using the mouse. Section 3 also has four alternative answers of an outline of a conversation. Section 4 has questions where you must type the answers in some blanks on the computer after listening to a short sentence three times for each question. According to the answers that you pick, the next question changes automatically to a more difficult or easier one. This style is the main feature of CASEC. Therefore, you don't have to answer extremely easy or difficult questions ― you can answer the questions at your level of ability. Consequently, you can finish the test in the very short time of 40 to 60 minutes.

However, it isn't clear how the CASEC system determines abilities and calculates the scores from this test into TOEIC, TOEFL and English Language Proficiency Test scores, as they are all different kinds of tests. Moreover, we can't use the score of CASEC as evidence of our ability in society, unlike TOEIC and TOEFL. Many questionable issues for candidates remain in this test.

Therefore, the key point seems to be how you can make effective use of CASEC. You can find the results of the test after answering all the questions, and simultaneously read comments about your ability in vocabulary, expressions, and listening displayed on the computer screen. Another good point is that you can try it again and again. For example, if you try the test at the beginning of the spring semester and study hard on your weak points, and then try it again at the end of the semester, you will certainly realize your ability has improved. The histories of your previous tests are kept in the computer and you can see them anytime. Sapporo University students can take the test if they get a personal password at the SU Language Training Center, and you can apply for it at no cost only this year. Students who have no computers at home should try CASEC in the computer room of Sapporo University. Though CASEC isn't so well known at our university, it is recommended that you apply to take the examination at least once if you have any interest in it.
