In thefirst half of this year, crimes have been committed by ordinary boysand girls considered well-behaved with good school records and nocriminal histories. Are there any common factors among them thatimpelled them to kill?

Though these boys and girls committed crimes, they are usuallycalled "good children." In fact, "good children" is perhaps thekeyword to understand recent juvenile delinquency. They restraintheir own will and suppress their frustration to satisfy manyexpectations of them. This seems to be one of the causes of thesecrimes.

There is the great difference between children who can controltheir emotions and those who cannot. Juveniles who don't know how torestrain their frustrations may do something absurd or commit acrime. Some may commit misdemeanors or serious crimes and some may beled to manslaughter. If parents are the objects of murder, the maincause is probably the child's repressed frustration.

On June 20 this year in Nara Prefecture, the house where a doctorand her family lived burned down. The woman and her two children werefound dead. The father was not home at the time. The culprit in thismurder case was their oldest son, who is the father's child by aformer marriage. The boy said, "I was scolded about my grades by myfather. I set fire to the house to kill my mother and my youngerbrother and sister. I knew they were sleeping on the second floor."However, afterwards, he was apologetic for his actions.

In more recent cases involving juveniles, they tend to explode attrifling matters and commit crimes, with the highest number of casesoccurring in 2000. Many murder cases by seventeen-year-old boys andgirls happened in that year, and experts then indicated that boys andgirls who are egotistical have greatly increased. For that reasonthey apparently explode in anger when someone scolds them, and as aresult they kill someone.

The murder case in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture in 2004 was alsocaused by this reason. The assailant was a girl (she is younger thanthe boy was in the 1997 Sakakibara murder case) and she was in thesame class as her victim. This incident sent a huge shockwavethroughout the nation. According to the assailant's statement, shewanted to murder the girl because she wrote scathing sentences on themessage board of the assailant's homepage. The homepage was veryimportant for her, and so she decided to kill the girl because ofwhat she had done.

Because of the Sasebo incident, violent movies, books and videogames received great attention by the media. Though the mediareported about them at that time, they need to be observed moreattentively in the future.

Modern society is flooded with information; moreover, cell phonesand computers are prevalent. The nuclear family is considered to bethe norm these days. However, the connection among neighbors isgetting weak, and communication among family members has decreased. In consequence, parents don't know what their children are doing.Conversely, children don't recognize parental authority.

Perhaps communication problems are inevitable when a child enterspuberty. However, pressure from parent's unrealistic expectations oftheir children's future, combined with the use of corporal punishmentwith children for discipline, is not effective. Even if a conflict ofopinions between parents and their children occurs, it shouldn'tdevelop into murder if the relationship between parents and childrenis basically good.

If children commit a crime they will suffer a lifetime ofdisgrace, especially if they commit murder. Their thoughtless actiondeprived someone of their future life. This has become a very bigconcern nationwide. Local governments, private enterprises, schoolsand neighborhoods should tackle this problem together, and theyshould see to it that these types of crimes never happen again.

The most important thing is for both adults and children toempathize with each other and restore Japan to a safe country.

@
Japanese
Topics
Index

@
