He told of his days at Ball State and his futureplans.
ÒI studied mainly business there since I want to run a company in thefuture. Of course, I studied other things. However, I couldnÕt thinkof anything but study for the first a few months because I had toread the textbooks so much everyday as preparation for classes andhad assignments everyday, too. Needless to say, those books werewritten in English. It took me a lot of time to finish them. I oftenhad trouble in doing assignments and couldnÕt understand thelectures. In such cases, I would visit the professors in their officehours to ask questions. They were very friendly and answered mekindly, however simple my questions were.Ó
Then he spoke of some differences between Americans and Japanese. ÒIfelt both students and teachers tackle classes with all their might.Students never speak to each other during class. Few people come lateto class. The teacher comes before the appointed time to start theclass on time. If they donÕt understand something, they ask theteacher over and over again until they are convinced. So a lot oftime is spent on questions and answers.Ó
He told about college life next. ÒTo my surprise, there were moreAsian students than I had imagined,Ó he said. In fact, there wereabout six hundred Asian students at Ball State. Sometimes troublehappens among students from different countries because ofmisunderstandings or language problems. But they become friends againsoon. ÒI made Asian friends, too,Ó he said. ÒOn the campus, there aretennis courts, a gymnasium, and a movie theater. When I didnÕt haveany class, I played tennis with my friends, worked out in the gym, orwent to see movies.Ó I asked how he spent the vacations. ÒI tooktrips. I went to Toronto with a friend, to Chicago with my hostfamily, to Florida with my friends. Those were great trips.Ó
Last of all, I requested a message for younger students. ÒTo studyabroad is good for improving your English skills. But I also thinktoo much information beforehand is unnecessary. It could make yourlife there dull. Though you may meet with some problems, even theycan be enjoyable. You can do anything if you have a strong will.Ó
Mr. Shinada will return to America and enter graduate MBA (Master ofBusiness Administration) at Ball State after he graduates from SU. ÒIthought I need to study business especially in graduate school to runa company in the future. And I want to acquire knowledge as a weaponto cope with the current depression.Ó Then I asked him why he wantsto study in America. ÒIt is difficult to major in another fielddifferent from that studied as an undergraduate. But in America, people can choose their field of interest. Anyway, the biggest reasonis that I like America.Ó
He must take GMAT (Graduate Management Administrations Test) to applyfor MBA school. He has studied hard for the test and he also workspart-time to earn money to study in America. I hope for his successand many people follow his remarkable career.

Japanese

Topics

Index
